The Philosopher who Died from Laughing

Apr5,2024

Did you ever make a joke and laugh at it harder than everybody else? This is the story of a man who laughed a little too hard at his own joke.

Most of what we know about the history of philosophy is from the work of Diogenes Laertius – “The Lives of Eminent Philosophers”. According to him, Chrysippus died at the age of 73 after “laughing too much”. He saw a donkey eating figs and cried out: “Now give the donkey a drink of pure wine to wash down the figs”. Call me uncultured but I do not find the joke funny either.
